Why Are We Here?

Some people struggle in life because they feel an overwhelming need to understand their purpose here on Earth. It isn’t always easy to comprehend, especially when so many of us simply ‘get on with it.’ But when intrusive thoughts begin questioning your very existence, they’re not so easy to dismiss as passing thoughts. They linger, pressing for answers.

It’s a strange concept to wrap your head around; we didn’t choose to be here; we simply appeared, almost out of nowhere. We have no memory of before we were born, none from our earliest infant years, and no real awareness of life until we were a few years old – perhaps even later for some. Consciousness arrives quietly, and suddenly we’re here, expected to make sense of it all.

So many of us simply accept our lives without question. Thoughts about existence may never enter the mind – and if they do, they pass in a passing moment of reflection, barely disturbing the surface. The brain isn’t taxed; life just carries on.

But why is it that some of us experience these pauses? Why do certain minds stop, linger, and wrestle with questions others seem able to move past?

Can you truly contemplate what it would be like not to exist – after having lived on this Earth for all the years you have?

Moments Of Propulsion

These feelings can push us toward decisions we might never have considered before. The cliché “you only live once” comes to mind – but beneath it lies something deeper. It’s the sudden awareness that the time we have left – whether a day, a year, or a decade – may not be worth spending stuck deep in the mud where we are currently.

If we’re in a job or career where we’re clearly unhappy, unsettled, or uninspired, why don’t we take more calculated risks? And if we do follow through and something doesn’t work out – is it really that catastrophic?

The honest answer is no – of course it isn’t.

Because if things already feel that bad, can they truly become worse? Sit with that thought. Let it settle. Repeat it to yourself in moments of doubt, especially when fear creeps in and questions your desire for change for the great good (yarp!).

The discomfort we feel in a draining environment doesn’t have to paralyse us. It can be fuel. We can take the very frustration that exhausts us and use it as an accelerant – something that propels us into a different mindset, a different direction, a different life.

When we finally pluck up enough courage to light the fuse – to ignite the fire beneath our own rocket ship – what’s left behind is nothing more than the blackened charred remains of what once held us back; the old job, the old doubts, the old version of ourselves.

We already have the fuel. It’s been building quietly for decades – decades of frustration, in restlessness, in that inner voice telling us we’re capable of more. The only question is whether we’re brave enough to strike the match and use it to its fullest, most explosive potential…

Of course we are.

We’re not choosing to be unhappy – we’re choosing not to change things when we are unhappy.
