What Generation Are You?
“Is Matt coming out?” – This is one of my only memories I remember from ‘hanging out’ with my friends when I was younger. I even remember knocking on the browny/red door and waiting in anticipation with the hope the answer was going to be a resounding ‘yes’.
It was definitely a simpler time back then without all this social media pressure. If I could go back to the days of being able to buy a brand new Nokia 3210 (yes, with the snake game!), I would do it in a heart beat, without a shadow of a doubt.The only caveat would be is that I would have to remain the same age as I am now.
The removable-front ‘brick’ phones are difficult to remember because I was only 11 or 12 when the first 3210 was released. It would have been unfathomable to imagine a future where AI is at the forefront and huge corporations around the globe are competing with each other to see who can make it into space first! Yes, of course space exploration had already happened (in 1961) by the time I was born, but nowadays, we’ve got Musk, Bezos and Branson all playing games with their little silly rockets! (That’s not a euphemism!)
I joke, but what they are achieving is simply incredible. I take my hat off to you, gents.
I Wasn’t A Treehouse Kid
This was either before my time and I missed the boat on this era, or we didn’t have a tree big enough to support my weight! Either way, I never got to experience my own treehouse.
As ‘youngsters’, we used to go into town together, play football and go to the cinema – this was our social life. Thankfully I was brought up well, and I didn’t get into any trouble – the only bad thing I did was facilitate the burning down of a fern tree in a school pal’s garden – It seemed like a good idea to play with an aerosol can with matches at the time. Let’s move on, in case he reads this! Oops!
Prior to owning my 3210 with a thousand different front fascia options, to speak to friends was either done over the landline phone at home or exceptionally rarely from a phone box – yes, to the younger readers here, there were red phone boxes in the street with pay phones inside! I feel like I am writing this hundreds of years in the future when in reality it’s only 28 years ago. Wow.
To even contemplate what technology will look like in just 100 years is beyond impossible.
